Ugh. I hate talking about myself.

Okay. Deep breath. Here we go.

I grew up on a farm in Southern Ohio on the edge of Appalachia. I had/have a lot of health problems so I spent my childhood either sick in bed or roaming the hills and hollers with my animals. Anyway, as a result, I have a rich interior life and not much use for things that are excessively fancy.

I majored in anthropology and biology in college because I find humans fascinating, possibly because I didn’t see too many before college. I went to law school for the wrong reasons and then library school for the wrong reasons but it somehow worked out.

I started as an academic law librarian, which is where I discovered three things: technology isn’t so bad, the legal system is kind of a disaster, and open source tools, content, and standards are the best systematic fix for so many problems. I also found my voice and began writing writing writing about everything I was learning and doing.

Here’s the thing: I don’t take myself seriously mainly because I take my work too seriously to have bandwidth left over for ego maintenance. My career looks weird on paper but makes complete sense to me — everything has been in service of making the legal ecosystem more equitable and functional, through community and education and occasionally just yelling into the void until something changed.

Not that I’m keeping score, but I’ve also accumulated a fairly ridiculous number of honors along the way. (Look, I said I don’t take myself seriously. I didn’t say I wasn’t good at this.) Inaugural class of the Fastcase 50. ABA Legal Rebel. ABA LTRC Top Woman in Legal Technology. A “le Hackie.” A Shuttleworth Foundation Flash Grant. Fellow of the College of Law Practice Management.

I’m not bragging.

Okay, I’m a little bragging.

What? This is my website. I’m allowed to brag.

Sometimes I tried to boil the ocean. Sometimes I focused on one very specific, very unsexy problem. Lots of wins, lots of losses, and I’ve kept learning through all of it. The day I stop growing and having fun is the day I quit.

(I have not yet quit.)

(But some days…)
